We now have the Long Reef Geotrail interpretative sign installed at Fishermans Beach, Collaroy. This marks a major step forward in the evolution of the Long Reef Geotrail, one of the flagship initiatives within the Ku-ring-gai GeoRegion in Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

We are most grateful for the support of Northern Beaches Council in producing and installing this Long Reef sign.

This self-guided geotrail interprets a 245-million-year geological story embedded in Triassic rock sequences, offering insight into the processes that have shaped the Sydney Basin coastline.  Follow the 8 Stops that highlight the key visible aspects of folded and stressed claystone cliffs, the fossilised remains of plants and insects and a Jurassic age (160 million years ago) dyke in plain view.

More than 140 species of birds have been recorded at Long Reef including 40 threatened species. In a visit you may see sooty oystercatchers, osprey, sea eagles, Australasian gannets, terns, cormorants or silver gulls.
